What is it?
Unlocking Potential is a customized online tutoring program created specifically for children and young people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. We pair each participant with a professional, DBS-checked online tutor experienced in working with diverse communities. Our project aims to enhance, not substitute, mainstream education. Students can access our intuitive online platform to receive one hour of additional educational support per week, focusing on areas where they feel they need more assistance. This hour can be scheduled during or outside of school hours.
Support offered?
Definitely! Our committed Tutoring Officer will be available to provide support from start to finish for the young people, their families, and the tutor. This ensures a seamless and effective learning experience for all involved.
Why?
BAME children and young people are often at a disadvantage in terms of school attainment compared to their peers. Unlocking Potential seeks to close this gap by offering customized educational support to those who need it most. Data from the Department of Education (2022) reveals that children and young people from specific BAME backgrounds such as Black Caribbean, Black African, Bangladeshi, Yemeni and Pakistani backgrounds consistently face some of the lowest educational outcomes across all stages of formal education compared to their White British counterparts. Our project aims to tackle and overcome these disparities, empowering BAME children to reach their full potential.
